Assume that all the pieces in the following examples are the same colour.
If you had T C P F M you would receive 5 points for colours, not 5 + 4 + 3 points.
If one has a line T T C C C you would score only 6 points for the 3-structures-in-a-row.
If you had F T T C C C, however, you would score 6 for the 3 structures and 3 for the 3 colours. You would not also receive 6 for 6 colours in a row.
If you scored 2 square-of-4-territories you would receive 16 points, but would not also score 12 points for the two 3-territories-in-a-row implicit in such a pattern.
If two players have the same number of a particular structure, neither gets points for having a majority. Such points are only awarded to a single player.
Choices: This variant allows you to hold up to 6 cards at a time instead of 4.
Total Score: In this variant you can see a running total of eachother's scores, but no itemized breakdown. This forces the system to score the board every turn and can therefore slow things down.
Full Disclosure: This variant implies 'Total Score'. Here the complete scoring matrix is visible and calculated every turn.
